In this first workshop, we’ll review your write-ups as a group and discuss them. We’ll then move through different ideation exercises to explore concepts.

Crazy 8s

In this exercise, separate a piece of paper into eight sketching areas. Either fold a piece of paper three times or draw lines on a canvas to create 8 boxes.

I’ll then set a timer for eight minutes. Every minute, draw a new idea into each square. I’ll notify you when the minute is up and it’s time to move on to the next square. Don’t worry if you haven’t finished your previous square—just make sure to follow the rules and move to the next square. Go with the flow!

Round Robin

We’ll start by filling in a How Might We (HMW) statement on a sticky note. Each HMW statement should be based on your project idea.

Each participant sketches out a solution and passes the paper on to the participant on their virtual left.

The receiver reviews the idea and writes down one or more reasons why the sketched solution would fail. The paper then gets passed on to the left once more.

In the last round participants come up with solutions to prevent the failures addressed to make the ideas stronger. The same participants iterating on the solution with improvements will be the ones to pitch the idea to the rest of the team.

different tactics to explore how to ideate new ideas, borrowing from gamestorming, systems, and other human-centered design techniques.

Now that we have the start of ideas, expand on them through more sketching. Here are some methods to help you.
